A wry view of life for the world-weary

Old Codgers Of The Week – Part Four

More tales of derring-do from our older generation.

News reached me this week of a remarkable 101 year old woman, Doris Long who, inevitably, is just 5 feet tall.

Doris has just broken her own world record for being the oldest abseiler when she descended the 94 metre Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, breaking her record which she set on her 100th birthday in May last year. She was none the worse for her experience, although she commented that her legs were aching and her hair was sticking out all over the place. Doris took up abseiling in her youth – at age 85 to be precise – and hopes to repeat the challenge and break her record again next year.

And belated congratulations to George Kirby and Doreen Luckie, aged 103 and 91 respectively, who tied the knot last month after a courtship which lasted 27 years to become the world’s oldest newly weds . In keeping with modern traditions Doreen had a hen party prior to the nuptials although George’s stag do had to be cancelled when he had a fall. Gratifyingly for all Englishmen their combined age beats the record of 190 years held by a French couple when they got wed.

You can’t keep the old ‘uns down!
