A wry view of life for the world-weary

Old Codgers Of The Week – Part Six

I must admit I have been following the Hatton Garden jewellery heist court hearing with some interest, not least because of the age of some of the alleged malefactors.

But hats off to Brian Reader aged 76, aka The Master, who travelled to the scene of the crime by London bus, taking the number 96 from near his home in Dartford to Waterloo East and then the number 55 to St John Street which is about a five-minute walk from Hatton Garden. He was able to do this courtesy of his Freedom Pass – the irony of the name must have struck him as he stood in the dock – which gives free travel to those over 60 in the capital.

He declined to attend the scene of the crime on the second night after the gang overran – I know, Sunday bus services can be so unpredictable and the connections are crap.

As all economics 101 student know, the first step to achieving profitability is containing expenses. That’s why Reader is the master!
