Whilst many people’s sporting attention this week has been caught by the derring-do of the plucky English falling to the footballing giants that are Iceland, I was drawn to a game in the Swedish 9th division between Pershagen SK and Jana SK’s reserves. The latter won 6-2 but that wasn’t the reason that the game piqued my interest.
Rather it was the dismissal of Pershagen’s 25 year-old left back, Adam Lindin Ljungkvist. What roused the ref’s ire and earned the defender an early bath was that he broke wind on the field of play. It was no ordinary fart – it was loud. According to Jana’s striker, “I was standing quite a distance away but I heard the fart good and clear”. The ref, Dany Kako, took it as deliberate provocation and gave the flatulent Adam a second yellow card.
There may be a very good reason why Ljungvists’ position is left back!
